Your Lions announced today that wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux has agreed to terms on a contract with the team through the 2017 season. Arceneaux was set to become a free agent in February.

“Manny is an important part of our offense and leader in our dressing room,” said GM and head coach Wally Buono. “This is a critical signing for the club heading into next season and I know our fans will be very happy to see him remain with the Lions.”

The five-year vet who led the Lions with 1,151 receiving yards last season on 76 receptions recently earned his first CFL All-Star nod.

“There was only one place I wanted to play and that’s in BC for Wally and Lions fans ,” said Arceneaux from his offseason home in Louisiana. “We’re going to be back in a big way in 2016 and I can’ t wait to get started.”

Arceneaux sits just 87 yards from 5,000 on his career and has piled-up 2,056 receiving yards over the past two season, a total only surpassed by Calgary’s Eric Rogers.

By now you’ve heard about the busy time we’ve had both prior to and during CFL free agency. We’re building a strong, exciting and competitive club for 2016 and it starts by keeping key players we already have on our roster. Signing both quarterback Travis Lulay and returner Chris Rainey really got the week off to a great start. Travis is a huge asset for our team and is going to play a very big role in our offence helping Jonathon Jennings with his continued development as well as serving as a top-quality back-up. Chris Rainey came to us midway through the season and showed that he is one of the most dangerous players on the field with the ability to score every time he touches the ball.

We lost a couple of players to the NFL from our secondary in the past couple months so it was critical to replace them with some quality starters which I believe we did with Mike Edem and Brandon Stewart. Mike was a very high draft pick that we would have taken back in 2013, but he was selected in the first round before we had a chance to take him. Getting him now as a seasoned defensive back is a major boost to our secondary and our Canadian content. Brandon is also a very experienced player having been in the league for nine years, the past two years with Hamilton. He is a very talented defensive back who has played on some tough defences and I know he will able to contribute right away.

On offence, we have been very active having signed four new running backs in the past week. Most recently, we were able to acquire Jerimiah Johnson and Anthony Allen who played in Ottawa and Saskatchewan last year. These are established players who have played in the NFL as well as the CFL and they will create a significant level of competition at that position heading into training camp. I’m also pleased to get Nick Moore back with us and add Levy Adcock to the offensive line. Nick is a skilled receiver who can really help our offence and Levy is a tough and physical offensive tackle who has spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and was an All-American at Oklahoma State before playing in Saskatchewan for the past two years.

We're now preparing for the CFL Combine, which takes place in Toronto in about a month. In April, we'll be in various states with our free agent camps. It's an exciting time for us as we begin to build our team. I'm very pleased about what we were able to accomplish these past two weeks and it's just the beginning of what I believe is going to be a talented, determined and focused team heading into 2016.
