The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that quarterback Buck Pierce has informed the team of his intention to retire.

Pierce originally signed with the Lions in 2005 and was a key member of the club as both a back-up and starter through five seasons (’05-’09) before playing three and-a-half seasons with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.  The former California resident who now makes his offseason home in Winnipeg returned to the Lions last year in a trade with the ‘Bombers and dressed for the final eight regular season games and the Western Semi-Final.

“Buck was a fearless competitor who never hesitated to put his body on the line for our organization,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “He was loved by both fans and teammates alike and on behalf of the Lions, we wish him the very best in the future.”

Pierce appeared in 94 games over his two stints with the club including a start in the final regular season game for the Leos in 2013. The nine-year, 130-game veteran out of New Mexico State recorded 15,289 career passing yards (8,964 with BC) on 1,200 completions (713 with BC) with 76 touchdowns (51 with BC). He won a Grey Cup championship with the Lions in 2006 and also guided the ‘Bombers to an appearance in the Grey Cup in 2011.

“I am very grateful for the support of teammates, fans and management in both BC and Winnipeg during my career,” said Pierce. “Having an opportunity to retire as a Lion where I won a championship is a tremendous honour. It’s been a great ride and I’m ready to move into the next phase of my football career.”

From the BC Lions today.

LIONS LOCK UP HARRIS WITH EXTENSION

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that running back Andrew Harris has signed a contract extension keeping him in orange through the 2015 season.

Harris enters his fifth year with the Lions and has never missed an appearance in his 72-game career. The Winnipeg native who became the club’s premier ball carrier midway through the 2011 season has 2,568 rushing yards on 251 career carries with 15 touchdowns.

“Andrew is a very talented running back who along with Stefan Logan, gives our offence a lot of options,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “This is a big step in the continuing effort to build a championship team and I’m very pleased to have Andrew as a Lion for years to come.”

Last season was another solid campaign for the club’s starting tailback who fell just two yards short of the 1,000-yard mark on the ground while leading all CFL backs with 61 receptions for 513 yards. His 1,511 yards from scrimmage last year not only led the Leos, it was more than 400 yards ahead of the next player.

“British Columbia has become my home and knowing that I will continue to wear these colours and play the game I love for this organization and Lions fans across the province is an amazing feeling,” said Harris.

Lofty numbers in 2013 including top-three rankings in touchdowns, rushing yards and yards from scrimmage garnered Harris a team nomination as Most Outstanding Canadian Player for a second consecutive year.

“Andrew is an elite football player in our league and I believe his best football is still to come,” said head coach Mike Benevides . “He works extremely hard as both a ball carrier and a receiver which not only makes him a challenge for defensive players, but also adds a dimension to our offensive attack.”

Thank you for support of the BC Lions Football Club! We look forward to speaking to you soon!

From the BC Lions.

Watch now! Head coach Mike Benevides on Matt Norman:

LIONS SECURE MATT NORMAN WITH EXTENSION.

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that centre Matt Norman has signed a contract extension through the 2016 season.

Norman originally joined the Lions as the club’s third-round selection (22nd overall) in the 2012 CFL Draft. The Western University grad enters his third season this June after solidifying his spot as the team’s starting centre last year.

“Matt has shown tremendous progress and maturity in his first two seasons playing one of the most important positions on the field,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “His extension along with our recent signing of Hunter Steward and the return of Kirby Fabien means that the future of our offensive line is in good hands and it’s along the line of scrimmage where championships are won.”

Departing midway through his rookie season in 2012 to conclude his post-secondary studies, Norman returned to the Leos roster in time for the Western Final that year and enjoyed a remarkable 18-game regular season in 2013 filling in for veteran Angus Reid at centre.

“Matt has responded incredibly well in some very high-pressure situations,” said head coach Mike Benevides. “The centre position is extremely important and knowing we’ll have continuity there is crucial to our success on offence.”

Norman, a native of Chateauguay, Quebec has appeared in 27 regular season games along with two playoff games.

From BC Lions! BC Lions welcome back Khalif Mitchell!

Watch now! Exclusive: one-on-one with Khalif Mitchell
http://www.bclions.com/video/index/id/95925?camefrom=EMCL_286942_13399986

The BC Lions Football Club today announced the signing of CFL All-Star defensive lineman Khalif Mitchell.

The former Lion and Toronto Argonaut who recently became a free agent returns to the club a little more than a year after being dealt to the East Division squad.

Last year, Mitchell enjoyed a standout season for the Double Blue posting 32 defensive tackles and a team-leading five sacks which earned him East Division and CFL All-Star kudos and came close to his career season with the Lions in 2011 when he notched 33 tackles and six sacks.

“As I have said many times in the past, championships are won at the line of scrimmage and signing Khalif who is one of the most dominant linemen in our league will greatly strengthen our defence,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “We’re confident that he is prepared to do whatever it takes to make us a championship organization on and off the field.”

Now entering his fifth CFL season, Mitchell has played 50 regular season games (33 with BC) recording 86 career tackles along with 13 sacks. The hulking defensive tackle has two CFL All-Star selections to his credit (2013, 2011) and also helped the Lions to a Grey Cup championship in 2011.

“It’s wonderful to be back in the city that I fell in love with four years ago,” said Mitchell. “I am excited to begin a new chapter with the Lions and do my part to help win a championship for this organization and our fans.”

The club also announced that defensive back Lin-J Shell has been released.

Yeh! BC Lions trade their 5th overall pick for QB Kevin Glenn who was with the REDBLACKS! What a great pickup for the Lions! I'm thinking Kevin is again happy after the REDBLACKS saga with them signing Henry Burris.

Lions to add Geroy Simon to Ring of Honour on July 25!

The BC Lions Football Club is pleased to announce that former Lions great, Geroy Simon will be recognized by the club with an induction onto the organization’s prestigious Ring of Honour on Friday, July 25 versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers presented by Telus.

Simon, the long-serving BC Lions slotback and future Hall of Famer who is both the club’s and the CFL’s all-time leading receiver announced his retirement from football earlier this month.

“Geroy will forever be remembered as a BC Lion and his induction onto our Ring of Honour is the most prestigious recognition that our organization can bestow upon him,” said president and CEO Dennis Skulsky. “Geroy’s legendary accomplishments on the field were matched only by his contributions to our community away from the game and I know fans of the Lions and Geroy will want to be part of this very special event.”

The official Ring of Honour induction ceremony will take place during halftime of the team’s home game versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday, July 25 presented by Telus.

From the BC Lions. Join us as we celebrate the career of Geroy Simon!

He came to the BC Lions as a free agent in October 2001 and he departed the CFL in 2013 as the all-time leading receiver and one of the greatest players to ever put on a helmet.

Geroy Simon, a name that has become synonymous with championships, big plays, Superman poses, community service and warm, friendly smiles for fans of all ages.

On Friday, July 25th when the BC Lions take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Geroy Simon will receive the highest recognition the club can bestow upon a former player by being added to the Ring of Honour during halftime.

This will be no ordinary addition to an exclusive group that already includes the likes of Joe Kapp, Willie Fleming, Jim Young and Bob Ackles to name a few. When Geroy takes his rightful place among the greatest men to ever play in orange it will be with the knowledge that no player will ever wear the number 81 again.

From BC Lions.

BC Lions hit the road to take on the undefeated Calgary Stampeders tonight - kick-off is at 7:00pm PT.

The Lions head into a hostile environment with confidence after going into a very tough situation at Mosaic Stadium in Regina in their last road performance on July 12th and coming out with a 26 - 13 victory over the Roughriders.

The Lions have a major positive in their strong defence, with league-tackle-leader Solomon Elimimian at the helm with his more than effective counterpart Adam Bighill (who sits tied for second). Elimimian had a staggering 12 tackles against Winnipeg last week and holds a 16 tackle lead over Bighill and Calgary's Brandon Smith.

Running back Andrew Harris also looks to continue his strong play on the heels of being named the CFL's Canadian Player of the Month for July. Harris leads the league with 311 rushing yards and is fourth in receiving yards with 268 to his name.

For their part, the Stamps remain the only undefeated team in the league after taking down the Eskimos 26 - 22, with pivot Bo Levi-Mitchell tying the franchise record for most wins to start his career with 7. Calgary is 4-0 to start a season for the first time since 1996.

From BC Lions.

The BC Lions Football Club announced this morning that quarterback Travis Lulay has elected to forego surgery and will continue to rehabilitate his right throwing shoulder.

Lulay suffered a shoulder dislocation on Friday, September 5 versus the Ottawa REDBLACKS in the game’s final moments and was subsequently placed on the club’s six-game injured list.

“I have considered all options with our team doctors, physiotherapists and training staff and at this point, I am very encouraged with my rehabilitation to date,” said Lulay. “Having been in this position last year, I am cautiously optimistic that I can return to action before the end of the regular season.”

Lulay suffered the initial dislocation last season on September 15th against the Montreal Alouettes, but returned to action in the final week of the regular season and was the Lions’ starting quarterback in the Western Semi-Final.

Following the 2013 season, Lulay elected to have surgery which was intended to increase the stability of his shoulder. The dislocation suffered in Ottawa this month put him on a similar rehabilitation timetable as the original injury last year.

“We believe Travis will be able to return to action in coming weeks,” said VP of football operations and GM Wally Buono. “At this time, he is set to come off the six-game injured list with two regular season games remaining on our schedule with a bye-week in mid-October also providing some additional recovery time.”

Also announced today was the release of defensive lineman Brandon Jordan. There were also four additions to the practice roster: WR Lavasier Tuinei, DB Brandon Jones, RB Bradley Randle and WR Derek Yachison.

Hello Lions Fan,

Your BC Lions kick-off the 2014 playoff campaign this Sunday against the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern Semi-Final! Kick-off is at 10:00am PT.

The two teams split their regular season series in 2014 with the home team winning both times, including an impressive 41 - 5 win for the BC Lions at BC Place on July 19th. This is however a very different Alouettes team from that time, with first year starter Jonathan Crompton leading the flock to an 8 - 2 record in their last 10 games of the regular season. This will be the first time the Lions have crossed over to the East Division for the playoffs since the 2009 season when they won the first round semi-final against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34 - 27.

It's the Lions and Alouettes in a first round playoff showdown, don't miss the action on Sunday at 10:00am PT!
