Wow! Mike "was" a star in Calgary not that long ago!

Montreal, Jan. 12, 2011 - Montreal Alouettes' Vice President and General Manager Jim Popp announced today the team has acquired Canadian defensive end Mike Labinjo from the Calgary Stampeders in exchange for future considerations.

"We are excited to give Mike Labinjo a chance to compete for a job on our defensive line and work with Coach Mike Sinclair.  Last season, Mike took a step back due to battling the injury bug, but we have high hopes he can re-capture those moments of dominance that he has portrait at times with Calgary", said Popp.

Labinjo (6'01'', 288 lbs) is coming to Montreal after four seasons with the Stampeders, where he won the 2008 Grey Cup against the Alouettes. In 44 career games, including 28 starts, he recorded 61 defensive tackles, seven special teams tackles, six sacks, nine tackles for a loss of 34 yards, seven knockdowns and two fumble recoveries. He also played eight games with the Philadelphia Eagles between 2004 and 2005 and two games with the Indianapolis Colts in 2005. He also spent time with the Miami Dolphins. He's 30.

Trade was voided.  Apparently the Als were not convinced that Labinjo would've been ready to go following bicep surgery in November.

After two sub-par years in Calgary, Labinjo will likely be much more focused on earning a job than getting a raise.  He's been unable to recapture anything approaching his 2008 form that led to the accolades.

Labinjo's alleged lack of commitment to fitness is the main cause for his rash of injuries and consequently poor play.  As a member of the rival Stampeders this doesn't really hurt my feelings any.  However as player that looked like a strong up and comer I find it sad that he can't find focus and strength to be the same player that terrorized offenses in '08.  I have a suspicion that this might speak to the lack of character and quality leadership in The Stamps locker room.  Nothing so much that I've heard just a feeling.
