Anthony Calvillo: new medical update
Montreal, Dec. 21, 2010 - The Montreal Alouettes would like to communicate a new medical update on quarterback Anthony Calvillo.

Last week, Anthony underwent surgery for a suspicious lesion on his thyroid gland. Pathology results have revealed the presence of some cancer cells.

Today, Anthony underwent a complete thyroidectomy by Dr. Roger Tabah at the Montreal General Hospital. According to Dr. Tabah, the surgery went well and there were no surprises.

This operation will be followed by a single treatment of radioactive iodine therapy in the month of January 2011.

Anthony will be treated with thyroid hormone replacement medication in the future. Anthony is expected to return to his regular training in February, and to be at his post at the start of training camp in June 2011.

Once again, Anthony and his family thank everyone for their support and encouragement. Anthony and Dr. Lacroix will not be available for interviews at this time.

Nothing but good news for Anthony Calvillo

Montreal, Jan. 28, 2011 - Friday afternoon, quarterback Anthony Calvillo had good news for Alouettes' fans when he announced that following his final round of treatment this week, he feels great and is confident that he will be ready to take snaps in another season behind centre for the Alouettes in 2011.

Anthony underwent surgery last December to remove his thyroid gland and on Wednesday, he underwent his only necessary radiation treatment. Dr. Roger Tabah, Calvillo's surgeon, believes that Anthony reacted very well to the treatment and should fully recover.

"After undergoing treatment, I feel great and my doctors are very satisfied with my progress thus far. After taking time to look after my personal health, I'm extremely excited to start preparing for another season of football with the Alouettes. I'll start my training regiments on Monday, which is the usual starting date for my off-season training," said Calvillo.

Anthony's doctors are extremely happy with his progress to date, stating that it is normal to recover this well from this type of cancer.

"After discussions with Dr. Tabah, he assured me that there should be nothing stopping Anthony from continuing his long and successful professional football career or from winning another Grey
Cup!," said the team's official Doctor, Vincent Lacroix.

Two-year contract
Calvillo has also signed a new two-year contract with the Alouettes. Calvillo is fresh off of a second-straight Grey Cup victory, the third of his illustrious career. Last season, he completed 380 of his 562 passes, registering 4,358 yards in the process. He threw 32 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions all season. His quarterback rating of 108.1 was a league-best. The 2011 season will be the 18th for the 38-year old and his 14th with the Alouettes.

"The most important information about this announcement today is that Anthony's prognosis looks great and he is feeling great.  The secondary news is that Anthony has signed on to play at least another season.  The Alouettes family is ecstatic about all the news!," said general manager Jim Popp.

"Anthony is the leader of the crew.  He has the attention of all his teammates and they will follow his lead.  He has gained unconditional respect through his play, his determination, and his fight. Anthony for years has offered his services for what is best for the team. He is not a selfish person and has sacrificed to help keep the Alouettes at the top," added Popp.

Signed a 2 year deal?  I didn't expect that.  I figured he'd stick around for 1 more year to break the numerous records he's on the brink of breaking.

So, if he plays for 2 more years, wins the Grey Cup in both those years, will he play another two years in an attempt to outdo Warren Moon's 5 consecutive Grey Cup wins?   ???

Good for Calvillo. One of the greats and a nice guy to boot (met him after their Grey Cup win in 2002).

I hope he can play at his current level. He modified his diet in 2009 and it seems to have helped quite a bit when combined with his workout routine (I don't know how much he changed that).
