Mo Lloyd $200K?!?
« on: December 30, 2008, 10:13:12 AM »
There was a rumour floated on the Sportsline show in Regina last night that, based on what is supposed to be a good source, the Lions are poised to offer Maurice Lloyd a contract of up to $200K per season.  Now where are the Lions coming from with that kind of money?  I know they've been hacking and cutting and Lloyd is one of the premier linebackers in the league but $200K?  Is this even possible and, if it is, is it advisable or prudent?

It's advisable if you're not a Lions fan. Takes money away from other signing other players.

If Lloyd can get a contract with base and incentives worth $200K, I think he should go for it (I'll be sad to see him go if he doesn't accept whatever the Riders offer him). Get the money while he can because you never know when your career will end.

You been reading Marty York again Bill? Interesting that somebody knows what a team may be poised to offer someone who won't be a FA for 6 weeks......if he becomes a FA. That in a system where most never really can get a good handle on who makes what once they do sign a contract.

$200K sounds pricey to me. Having said that Clermont & Joe Smith/Charles Roberts alone accounted for roughly $350K of BC's SMS hit last year. Tack on the stipends of Floyd and Williams and they have created significant SMS room. I doubt they'd have any problem fitting that sort of money into their SMS budget. Whether that would be wise use of the money is an entirely different question. I would think he'd still command at least $150K. If a team really felt that MLB was a glaring hole that must be addressed then they might be willing to up the ante quite a bit if they have the room to do it.

Buono isn't exactly Ebenezer Scrooge with the money, but he also doesn't spend it foolishly. As for where the rumours came from keep in mind Buono hasn't been in the office for a couple of weeks now and won't be back in until mid-January. He's in the middle of his annual month long Hawaii vacation.

Not Marty, Dale, and I tend not to read much of Marty's "work" (read: "ramblings from the voices in his head").

It was John Lynch on the radio show the other night.  He's been around forever (way too long?) and has a tendency (IMO) towards loving to hear himself talk.  He's frequently wrong but you can't tell him that because of having been around forever (way too long?).  ::)

I don't mind John, but I have a good relationship with him. He tries to get the best information possible, but sometimes I wonder the validity of his sources. John doesn't make stuff up, but other people may not be giving him accurate information.

He's emailed me with little tidbits here and there about the Riders and other teams that have turned out to be accurate, but I won't say what out of respect for his sources.

But, to get back on topic, Hambone is right. Wally's on vacation and probably hasn't even considered the free agent situation and won't do so until he gets closer to the deadline.

I'm guessing John got information from somebody who was speculating and ran with it. I will email him and talk to him about this to see if I can try and squeeze out more information.

Can't say as I've ever heard of that John Lynch. Must be a flatlander legend unknown outside of Rider Nation. The only John Lynch I've heard of is the recently retired and likely Canton-bound NFL safety.

Johnh Lynch is (In) famous in these parts he has been a colour commentator on CKRM, with the Riders through the "reign of error". He became the "official apologist" for his friends, Tom Shepperd, John Lipp, Fred Wagman, and the rest of the  Board of the Sask Roughriders, who in spite of the 2-14 records could do NO wrong in John's eyes.

Mr. Lynch is more of a homer, than Bryan Hall, who is noted for his "Green and "gold" journalism, which involves missing the play by play, not informing the listener of Down and distance,  and promoting Tony Roma's Ribs's!

emmm Goooood.

Lynch is still around, does a local Cable Show, He's always been one for "the Stats". And has percieved by the masses, as a sort of the football expert.
